Not sure where to ask this, but anyway, I have heard people say they use a wood or hybrid on short par 4s, short par 5s. I am not clear on why, doesnt that just make the hole longer? Who wouldnt you want to be closer? I am sure there is logic here, I just want to understand so I can improve my course management.
Some have already said hit to a number, but another reason is because the fairway might have hazards/bunkers etc at a certain yardage. If you can't fly them (and I don't mean on a perfect hit) and it's pretty tight in the landing area, it's easier to hit a shorter club that you can likely hit safely in the fairway than try and flirt with a tee shot that might require threading the needle.
